A Poverty of Attention

(On Mars & Chiron)

Art by visualatelier

Way back in the 17th century, a Gemini child prodigy with the name Blaise Pascal commented on the state of the world by saying, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” Wisdom earned from Chiron’s cave for certain.

Today, mentor and protégé (Chiron and Mars) have a breakthrough moment. They are 60º apart. This sextile speaks to an integrated transmission-a lesson that has found its way from the head into the heart, nestling its way deep into our bones. Naturally, the teaching will be different for everyone, yet thematically it seems to be a centaur’s certainty around the wealth of information we have accessible to us, which is creating a poverty of attention.

As Mars marches towards the dragon (Rahu) and the Moon joins the perilous trek today as well in Gemini, it’s important to remember the teachings. We all have more information swarming inside of us than we know what to do with, yet we often forget to just sit with it. To think. To actually think for ourselves without googling, without asking, by just sitting alone, quietly in a room alone. If we allow this space into our lives, the world will change.

Chiron has more than information to offer us though. He has orphan wisdom as well. His wild story paired with even wilder teachings can show us a way back home to ourselves. They can keep us from searching outside by piquing our curiosity inside instead; They can prune our blame before it grows, allowing responsibility to take its place. They can tune our being to the wild and remember that as long as we are listening, everything we ever wanted to know is swaying in the breeze.

Don’t think about it too much. Just do it. Go to your room (or a cave) and be quiet for a time. See what happens. And if you care to take it deeper, Chiron recommends a blindfold and a pair of earplugs as well. If you desire vegetal allies, they can help too.

Enjoy
