Dragons, all the way down
…On the Scorpio Solar Eclipse

The serpent supports the universe from beneath…’

Soon, much of Europe will be partially eclipsed. On October 25th, just before lunchtime, the New Moon will find itself in the shadowy bowels of Ketu (the South Node of the Moon). Once it happens, the dragon hole will open.

As ominous as it sounds, it’s not always the case. A more neutral-even accurate-way of describing eclipses is as plot twists. The prayer then is that we don’t see the conflict in the east of Europe ‘twist’ into a more dangerous escalation. Now, even if you will be missing this eclipse in person, it doesn’t mean you are off the hook. Wherever 2º Scorpio falls in your chart, is where the serpent is coiled. Considering aspects and also the fact Venus is on the same degree, combust on the other side of the Sun is important to remember.

When eclipses occur near Ketu, old stories often rise to the surface to be worked with, begging to be released. Being that we are already in eclipse season, these themes may be appearing early. For myself, just last night, I watched a documentary called Hockeyland. It’s an accurate depiction of small-town Minnesota hockey culture and the intensity of that way of life. It’s how I grew up and I’ve never been able to fully explain to anybody in my life just how impactful that decade was on my development. After watching it last night with my partner, she understands me better, but I was also able to spend some time back there myself, and remember my own senior year when I lost my best friend, my father, and left behind everything I knew. Again, old stories emerge to be worked with.

Some eclipses are more obvious than others. It doesn’t always depend on their totality either. In my observations, it’s more relevant to where they fall in our charts. With my example above, it’s helpful to note that my Moon is at 8º Scorpio (so it’s going to be close).

The Chandra Symbol for this eclipse is poignant:

SCORPIO 3
Pigs being fed.

…the commentary on this degree sounds like the Pavlovian response. It brings up the success of the state and social media in how they’ve been able to train so many to obey, without question. When they say sit, they sit; be afraid, they are terrified; that ‘they’ are the enemy, ‘they’ are now Russian agents. The mental hijacking must first be recognized, then rebelled against. It’s a rallying cry for rewilding of our caged spirits. Or, if you enjoy the trough, I suppose it doesn’t apply in the same way.

The Lunar Eclipse in Taurus is what will close the dragon hole. That one is on Nov 8th. It’s the Polarity of the Buddha (flipped, Buddha was a Taurus with the Moon in Scorpio). To remember, Siddhartha sat on that still point under the bodhi tree, and the serpent rose up from below that point and his hood shielded buddha from the rain during his samadhi (cobra’s also have the Ketu symbol on their hood). Again, the serpent supports the universe from below. Rahu and Ketu are a form of the cosmic serpent. Each and every eclipse is a chance to become more intimate with the terrifying truths of our existence. The fact eclipses are even possible is enough to sit with for the rest of our lives. But to consider they have meaning, and they tinker with our story, is even more mesmerizing.

Don’t fear the eclipses. Respect them instead. Learn from them, shed skin with them, and grow.
