…On Pluto’s station & moment with Mercury
It’s been 16 years since Pluto was demoted. In August of 06' the International Astronomical Union (IAU) had decided this little icy ‘planet’ hadn’t cleared its neighborhood properly-that is, it lacks the gravitational dominance-to be considered a planet; So they named it a dwarf. Now, whether a dwarf planet or an actual one matters very little to astrologers. We’ve been constellating Pluto since 1930 and I think most would agree: Pluto does a fabulous job of clearing the ‘neighborhood’ and also has enough gravity to be concerned when he comes close-or transits something sensitive in our charts.
As an example, there are these 250-year-long Revolutionary Cycles macro analyst Mark Moss often talks about. With zero context around the fact that Pluto’s orbit is 248 years, he talks about how we are at the peak of one currently. The last time one came crashing in was the late 18th century (some may think of that time as the American Revolution). And before that, 250 years earlier, it was the early 16th century (some may remember that time as the Protestant Revolution). These then were also times when Pluto was in Capricorn -at least for a chunk of the period. And so what of it now? Revolution, again?
Martin Shaw has this raptor eye observation about our moment in time, he says “We get the rupture but we lack the rapture.” Everyone pretty much agrees that we have sailed into dangerous waters. Nobody can agree on how we got here or how we get out of them, but there is consensus that we are f*cked. An important detail about this cycle is that the world’s unelected superpower, the USA, is in the thralls of its first Pluto Return. What does that mean? Well, just turn on the news. So we’ve got the rupture down, yet we lack the rapture.
With Mercury now direct, one of his first moves is to actually trine Pluto (Virgo/Capricorn). It happens on Friday (Oct 7th). Then, on Saturday, Pluto stations direct. It’s as if Mercury’s words are going to push the Lord of the Underneath into motion. It’s usually how it works.
It’s why we save quotes. The reason why we read or listen to stories is a search for these words. But it’s not just the words, it’s what they point to. Mercury offers us an understanding which can grant rapture. “Ah hah!” “Oh, I’ve never thought of it like that before!?.” And the more open our minds are to information, the higher likelihood we have of such an opening. When we are closed off, only taking in mental calories from one side (left or right) there is little rapture, mainly rupture. And that’s what we see in the belly of the beast having a Pluto return: all rupture, very little rapture.
For us personally, we can take such nuanced transits seriously and allow them to imbed themselves into our psyche where they can bring the transformation by killing off useless ideas and replacing them with life-giving ones. We all have at least a handful of rotten concepts that could use composting. Let it happen. We must make room for the rapture.
