Hermeneutics

It’s important to see everything twice-or, in a hermetic sense, thrice!

Whether it be a text or story, a person, place, or thing it has more layers than we can first imagine. Take a turtle for example: Seen through a scientific eye, it’s a reptile that has a shell for protection. Seen through a more poetic and intuitive eye, the turtle is a fertile creature who carries its home between two worlds-water and earth. And through the eyes of baby Hermes, that same turtle is a lyre. When we see with a hermetic eye, we are moving with imagination. It shows the image in the form. It speaks through the wind. It leaps from the page.

With Mercury (Hermes) now at cruising speed, headed for the heart of the Sun, retrograde and proud of it, it’s this interpretative eye we must be cultivating. We need to become master translators of his tricks. We must be loving thieves of images in our memory and of language that moves us from others. When Mercury is Rx, there is more medicine than we can usually handle. We just need to learn to see it this way. It’s an engaging form of hermeneutics.

Hermeneutics is a branch of knowledge dealing with interpretation. It takes the whole of a subject, analyzes it into parts, and tries to synthesize an understanding back around to the whole. Yet, if we fail to come back to the whole, the mystery of the subject, we are left with chopped parts. This is one of the great problems with our world. We have analyzed it to bits and abolished the mystery. We sacrifice synthesis on the altar of Reason. And it makes Hermes terribly upset.

So, today as the Scorpio Moon allows us to dream and reflect on the square to Mercury, let’s try to interpret without killing; to see, feel, and hear thrice into everything, being satisfied without conclusion. There are ten thousand ways to both tell and hear a story. Allow this magic to work you in mysterious ways.

Praise Hermes!
