If our eyes allowed us to see more of the spectrum of light, this is what Andromeda would look like from Earth. If our ears could detect more sound waves, we would hear much more than a dog whistle-perhaps even, plant and animal speak. And if we could smell, taste, or feel beyond our limited scope, how much would this change our version of reality? There may come a day when such modifications will be made optional for us, but until then, we are left with one that is even more exciting: The entire universe to be explored within, matching the one spiraling forever on the ‘outside.’
Blaise Pascal once pointed out that “All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.” A challenge we should all be sick of by now in 2020. With the ebbs and flows of ‘lockdowns’ and the constant whisper luring us back into the machine, we have been given more time to reflect and go deep in the past 9 months than probably our entire lives; Did we? Will we? Why not, if not?
And as the Sun shines into the icy abyss of Scorpio, and the Moon wears the ‘horns’ of Mercury as she cradles the emotions of this lunation, waning towards their union on the 15th (New Moon), there is a hefty bundle of other planets pointing at similar themes in the sky. Just yesterday, Venus and Mars had their semi-rare opposition; when the lovers are this far apart, sometimes the love letters don’t arrive, the currency of longing devalues, and a breaking point is felt within the tension of their distance. On Thursday (12th), Jupiter will conjoin Pluto again to peel off yet another layer of ontological skins. And today, as I write this on November 10th, Mercury moves back into Scorpio, retracing his thieving steps, attempting to integrate the new ideas which have claimed us. Mars and Pluto, the Lords of Scorpio, both up to something while our Star and his messenger descend beneath fallen leaves, toward the underneath. Essentially, it’s a perfect time to take Pascal’s quote seriously.
Scorpio gets a bad rap. But that’s only from the uninitiated, those without depth and unfamiliar with the ‘quiet room.” When so many planets seem to converge profoundly around fixed water, it’s an invitation to dive deep-no matter the temperature. It’s an important stage in the alchemical process. A necessary moment in transformation. It’s a soul confrontation that watches zodiacal prejudice evaporate into thin air as new worlds are discovered inside. New senses are discovered as well. Maybe not the capacity for seeing approaching galaxies with the naked eye, but at least the acceptance of their inevitable collision. Acceptance: that’s the word we’re looking for.
It is Scorpio that shows us what true power really is. The Buddha was born under full Scorpio Moonlight. What did he teach us?
