On the Mars/Neptune

Art by Megan Duncanson

We weren’t built for this. To have the ability to witness what is happening at any coordinates, at any time, with everyone's opinion in real-time along an infinite scroll is beyond our processing power. The fact we even try is honorable. We want to help, we want to care, yet we are unequipped. It’s enough to give a radiant bodhisattva an anxiety attack. Yet still, we bring it online to signal to the world our virtues, to engage our opinions within these digital chambers to market our stance. But why? To feel validated in our bias? To fight? To socialize? It’s a nebulous arena, one that may have more tangles than we even realize. The feeling we have towards all this may experience a spike today as Mars makes his semi-rare opposition to Neptune (once every two years).

Mars is irritating. Like one of his plants, stinging nettles, if we get too close, we will inherit a rash, but if we take good care with it, prepare the medicine wisely, we will be deeply nourished. Mars is no different. Like all medicine, it’s important to get the dosage right. When Neptune’s collective is pulling at his patience, it’s quite easy to get lost while seeing red. it’s a straight and lonely road that leads to the blues.

Neptune is challenging to talk about for many reasons. One being the elusive and amorphous nature of it; another is that it’s hard to pin down a movement or a zeitgeist with language. Perhaps it’s why we created hashtags. Hashtags are a vehicle for memes to travel on throughout the collective mind at light speed. They are effective. They are divisive. They get the job done. And when the strong hands of Mars begin to push and pull at the four lines (#), all polarities are highlighted, and the games begin.

No single transit will change us in an instant. However, all it takes is one image, one vision, one strong feeling to correct our course. Mars/Neptune can be a ‘last straw’ moment. A riptide we surrender to. We may realize the addiction has gone too far. There may be a conclusive blowout. We may see the deception clearly in our lives-within and without-and vow to do our best in stopping the lies. We see the sharks circling and decide not to swim. The narrative is unique for everyone, yet the common denominator is a longing for honesty and truth. It comes once we stop searching for it.

The nature of any opposition often will often manifest in others. When Mars is involved, we become triggered from the outside. What we hate, what we feel we are better than, what we no longer have time for is how we spot it. That’s the martian shadow. Neptune can help us awaken from this hex we are under. When we do, something like compassion blossoms gently from our center. It’s the final destination for all of us.
