Art by Pablo Picasso “The Old Guitarist”

The story with Mars and the Boneyard perks up again today with Saturn stationing direct, squaring Mars. It is a grinding narrative in our lives these days, one which must be properly honored and understood.

At the turn of the 20th century, Picasso entered his “blue period.” Triggered by the death of a close friend due to unrequited love, paintings like the “Old Guitarist” came through him during this period. The melancholic air of Saturn is clear, the fire of Mars is not. This period for the Spanish painter began with an opposition of Saturn in Capricorn to his natal Mars. When the “malefics” align, we can expect such internal battles with the blues (black and reds as well). It doesn’t guarantee the blues or bad fortune, but they do enforce deep introspection, no doubt.

From such a space, Picasso once said, “without great solitude, no serious work is possible.” Throughout 2020, we have been gifted ample amounts of opportunities to investigate this rich and solemn space. For those who have, likely discovered a bit of gold in its seemingly barren landscape; for those who haven’t, who may be taken by the founded rage of the zeitgeist, may be finding themselves swinging their sword at thin air like old St. George in his final days. The fight, as always, starts from within. Saturn’s leaden truth: heavy and true as time.

Personally, I had a brief moment to sulk yesterday when I picked up my guitar-caked in saturnine dust and out of tune-to discover I have nearly lost my callouses on my fingers. Tragedy. Something that has never occurred since I began playing at age 17. I then felt it in my lungs when I began to sing and sensed it, even more, when I went for a run to burn through the sulking. Something I adore has begun to atrophy. Saturn’s reminder, Mars itching to be plugged in. No regrets though, just an embrace of the changing of practices. Acceptance.

When engaged with the two, it’s wise to turn to a practice. One we have resistance to doing, yet always feel better on the other side of. Whether it’s sitting or stretching or working out, playing, singing, writing, acting, running, walking, standing, we practice to prepare for moments like these. We also practice to get better. Whatever your practice is, make Saturn happy by doing it and see if Mars calms because of it and becomes excited like an arrow on the string for the next flight.

Saturn’s son Chiron is also opposed to the Sun today, making him close, retrograde, and ready to teach. What would Chiron do in this situation? WWCD?

*Find them all in your chart. Mars in Aries. Saturn in Capricorn. Chiron in Aries as well. Talk to them. Ask them questions. You may be surprised by such an approach.
