.: The Wise Comet :.
As you are probably aware: We have a visitor!
First spotted at the end of March, just as the pandemic was infecting all of our conversations, in the wake of a flash crash in world markets, and amidst the wildest conspiracies I’ve ever heard, Neowise came into our awareness. Named after the telescope used to spot it, what kind of new (neo) wisdom (wise) can be taken in from its message.
Historically, comets were messengers-but not always of the greatest news. In 684 AD when Halley’s Comet passed by, there was a three-month rainstorm and an outbreak of the Black Death. Yet, some say the Star of Bethlehem which caught the eyes of the Magi was a comet, one whose ‘message’ was baby Jesus. If there were to be a common denominator in the interpretations of comets throughout the ages, it seems that they portend natural disasters. Aristotle believed this and thought that comets would bring hot and arid years, with calamities attached. Being we are already in the midst of such a nightmare, maybe we can agree that perhaps ancient sky-gazers were onto something, yet what if there were a more nuanced interpretation. What if comets also have coded messages in their icy coffers. What if the earth rumbling and the waters rising in conjunction with a comet’s appearance were also coupled with a deeper, more spirit-infused teaching. What if…?
One way of beginning to decode this is by tracking Neowise in your chart. It’s been in Cancer for the majority of July and is about to whip through Leo and VIrgo for the rest of the month. Zodiacal coordinates were always important when interpreting comets in a mundane sense, for nations and Kings/Queens, but what about for ourselves? We just had a Total Eclipse in Cancer. Mercury just was retrograde in Cancer. And with Neowise also present, how does it light up the Cancer themes in your life, in your chart? Not just light up but also reveal something that was perhaps frozen in ice inside of you. What is it burning off in the atmosphere of your consciousness? What is the message in the smoke?
The color of the comet’s tail was also important to our ancestors. Greyish tones related to Saturn; brighter, more yellowish ones were attributed to Jupiter; Red: Mars. I cannot confirm the colors of this one as of yet, mainly because of viewing conditions here in Dartmoor, but also it’s place in the early morning skies (I find it hard to wake before the Sun). For the rest of July though, Neowise will be visible after sunset, in the proximity of the Big Dipper. What color are you seeing? Where in the chart does it fall for you? Again, what messages are your receiving?
I have said since the beginning of the pandemic, that the only worse succession of events I could imagine is that of a comet. This one doesn’t seem to be coming for us, but it’s still a humbling thought to entertain. Even a small cometary impact would end life as we know it. So count your blessings we have got off so easy thus far. Enjoy your health while you have it. Enjoy your loved ones while they are here. Collect stories. Tell them often. Because in the end, who are we without our stories. For me, comets are the best reminder of just how vulnerable we are. So I say Carpe Noctem-that is ‘seize the night’ my friends!
Neowise is both fascinating us, helping us to remember, and taunting us as well. A taunt that is more like a dare, asking: I dare you to take your life more seriously; In fact, I double dare you to see the sacred in all of this.
