The World Soul Animal
On the Anima Mundi and the space between eventful transits
We have passed through the threshold of the second square between Saturn and Uranus. The old guard is stubborn, holding its ground near the ruins of an aged and crumbling temple while a wide-eyed spirit moves towards mining magic with volcanos and attempting to decipher once and for all the UFO mystery. There is nothing boring about our time. And with Hermes still reflecting, zipping past Earth, planning an appearance in the morning sky, we can hope that we have found at least a feather from the wing of an Idea set to change us forever.
Yesterday, I found myself in a soulful discussion with Thomas Moore (author of “Care of the Soul” and many others) where we were revisiting the old idea of the Anima Mundi-or, ‘The Soul of the World.” He was stressing the importance of seeing the World Soul as an animal, not some abstract concept attempting to explain our place on this planet. We talked a lot about the savant Marsilio Ficino of the Italian Renaissance who agreed with this surreal concept. He felt the World Soul to be a huge animal with an extremely refined soul that surpasses in excellence the souls of all men, as well as the angels. Plato felt this way as well, as have many soulful folks well versed in the language of birds throughout time. If true, it puts a tail on Pachamama, perhaps some leathery wings on Gaia, and a few diamond teeth in the mouth of the Mother. It’s a lovely idea, one that can transform our relationship with the planet.
We need better ideas. One could argue that we are starved for them, even shut down from sharing some of them, thanks to the booby-trapped environment we find ourselves in. We can’t be afraid to share our ideas. If we lose that, we also lose our connection to the Soul of the World. It is said that both Love and good ideas are what feeds the Anima Mundi. If we are afraid to share our ideas, we then starve the Soul of the World, in turn, ourselves as well. Something like hate rules in its stead. Or fear. It’s the resistance created from the worry of being canceled or pushed to the edges. So be it. All the most interesting ideas are found at the edges anyhow. We must embrace whatever comes through the sharing of the ideas Hermes drops into us when he is close. And at the moment, he is still close enough to hear his whispers.
The idea is this: Be an owl on a perfect branch for tracking. Watch closely for an idea to scurry across the forest floor. Silently swoop down and grab it. Don’t eat it though. Instead, nourish it, raise it up, and watch what happens in the coming months as we move deeper into the Mercury Cycle. You will certainly be surprised by what it will teach you.
Find its coordinates in Gemini with your chart. Thank the World Soul for providing us with charts.
Praise to Hermes and the Soul of this World
Whatever you are, we are eager to remember you
Our lives depend on it
