Twisting Time

…On the eclipses

unknown artist

Eclipses have a way of getting our attention. There’s something about the changing of the light. It hits us at all levels. Logically, they don’t make sense. Intuitively, they seem to have meaning. Spiritually, they definitely work in mysterious ways. From atop the ziggurats of Mesopotamia to the White House where the Red King gawked at the ‘Great American Eclipse’ without glasses, they’ve always been impossible to ignore. And they are coming around once again.

There are three territories to consider when thinking about eclipses: The first being the season; The second being the window/or ‘dragon hole;’ And the third being the actual eclipses. Eclipse season is the space around them when they are possible. It relates to the Sun’s proximity to the Nodes of the Moon. If within 18–19º of Rahu or Ketu, an eclipse can occur. This is where time begins to twist. The eclipse window is the space between eclipses. They always happen in pairs-a solar and a lunar; sometimes there is a third or even a fourth. The window-or as I call it, the ‘dragon hole,’ closes with the last eclipse. It’s in this window when the events usually occur. Occasions like encounters with dragons or our elusive demons. Not always intense, but usually memorable when looking back. And the actual eclipses are when the veils are thinned and we should be doing our best to remain in our ground state. The portal of an eclipse has been respected-even feared-for thousands of years. The Vedic minded encourage us to do our practices doing these times. Lots of hungry ghosts are looking for homes. A case for paying heed to tradition.

As I write, we are on the cusp of eclipse season. Dragons circle the imaginal realms and a part of us senses a change in the story. On April 30th, when the Moon catches up to the Sun at 10º28' Taurus we will experience our first eclipse of the season. It’s a partial one only visible way down south along the tip of South America. Even though most of us won’t see this eclipse, it means very little about how it may affect us. Wherever Taurus falls in our chart is where the plot twist will likely take place. Considering important aspects to it as well is always wise. It is also a North Node eclipse, which begs us to tend to the story we’ve been trying to write. There is an increase in novelty, fresh connections, and epiphany available. There is also the shadow cast by our desires. We must be a hawk along the walls of our center, watching intently for cravings that lead to the wrong kinds of trouble.

The Chandra Symbol reads:

TAURUS 11

A woman with flames for hair.

…desire so hot it lights our hair on fire. Driven with laser focus with little regard for the needs of those around us. An inability to empathize or ever see from another angle. Hard-headed and obsessed with the bull’s eye; an event is pending that will shake us from this fixed momentum we have been in.

The two main aspects of this eclipse are the conjunction to Uranus, also in Taurus, and a sextile to Mars in Pisces. The two mirror this symbol well. With Uranus offering the sensation within our unique perspective, feeling it to be closer to the beam of truth than anyone else’s, and Mars giving us the fuel of oxygen in our blood to keep us on the fast track. As we pass through this dragon gate, it’s essential to allow the energy to do its thing. If it pulls us from our aim, so be it. It might be best to have a cooling-off period where we can educate ourselves on a few other narratives playing out around us. It’s never wise to think we’ve got it under control. The gods will always send dragons to show us otherwise.

And then, two weeks later, the eclipse window will close with the Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio on May 16th. More on that as we near it.

In summary, enjoy the dragons. Avoid dabbling with magic during eclipses. And if you must stare, do so like some indigenous do, view it through sacred smoke.
