On the Venus/Mars conjunction

art by Mary Sparrow

Two years ago, somewhere in the beams of our star, the Lovers embraced in coniuntio in Virgo (Aug 24th, 2019). A little over two years before that (Oct 5th 2017), they came together again, this round spinning stories with Virgo as the backdrop in the morning sky. Today, they reunite: Venus and Mars-an alchemical wedding worth attending. And this time, their embrace can be seen in the evening’s sky with the hopeful Moon looking on, no longer in Virgo, but Leo instead.

From morning sky to evening sky to no sky in between, the two have a wyrd trajectory when it comes to their plans for reunification. But like clockwork on the wrist of a Norn, they always come back together. Their journey is perilous, the longing unbearable, sacrifices unimaginably difficult, yet the commitment unwavering. It is a story we all live and die for. The aim? Unio Mystica-or, the fusion of Soul with the Universe. Sun and Moon; Black and White; You and me. A transcendent glimpse beyond polarities.

A quick peek at the Chandra Symbol and Elias Lonsdale’s commentary for 20º Leo is revealing:

“A black pearl hidden in an oyster”

Working very hard to find again what is lost, to get at what is conspicuously missing, it takes tremendous inner forces to restore the pearl. But most of all, you must vanquish your pride and acknowledge from the core of your being that going through this world without your deep soul intact is hell. If you seek, you shall find. If you ache, you shall come to a restored wholeness. But not without the suffering, the grief, and the facing of the void; initiation in the depths. It is a superb path if you have the courage and stamina for it. But midstream it is cauterizing, corrosive, and deadly; appearances are deceptive; nothing is as it might seem for a while. What matters supremely is guts and integrity.

For many us, we have lost contact with this “deep soul” over the course of the pandemic. Whatever narrative you pay a subscription to, the amount of fear, anger, helplessness, and apathy which has been pummeling our shores is enough to break the strongest of us. Yet, within this strong emotion, there are billions of potential pearls. We just need to take notes from the oyster and use something like nacre to surround the grit which has embedded in our Soul, and keep our attention there. In time, a pearl will inevitably emerge. It’s also fascinating to know that just one oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water a day, assisting in keeping our oceans clean and the waves at bay. Applying this to our emotional bodies and the tsunamis they have experienced over the past two years, we could probably use more than a single oyster within, but an entire reef, yet at least something majestic and valuable is being created beneath the waves. And somewhere near this reef, the two Lovers become One, and dream for now with the setting Sun.

To understand fully, find the two in your chart and in the sky tonight. Watch them. Learn from them. But don’t be a creep about it. Give them their space…it is their wedding night after all.

Praise be to the Mother of Pearl

and the commitment of oysters
